Topic: USB Recording

Can record the streamed data on my phone (android) no problem but switching to usb haven't been able to create a playable video yet. Had a couple of temp.vid files and have left longer to process as other threads have said and have a couple of mp4 files on stick but they won't play (vlc, mediaplayer, quicktime).

anyone got any ideas?

Re: USB Recording

Got the same problem, can't record to the USB, any help would be appreciated

Re: USB Recording

Hi,

Make sure USB recording is set in the Freeflight app and that your USB stick has sufficient space (greater than 100MB). The USB also needs to be formatted to FAT 32 and we recommend a USB key with a metal shroud.

Re: USB Recording

Thanks for quick reply.
Yes, I've tried several FAT32 formatted USB's with metal shrouds having well over 100MB free and have the USB recording set to on.  No luck
I'm using my iPad version 3 with iOS 5.1
Freeflight version 2.01
Ar.drone Hardware 2.1 Software 2.1.18

There are quite a few posts regarding trouble with USB recording.  Is there Software Update coming that will fix it?

Thanks,
Gary

Re: USB Recording

Hi,

Thanks for the update, this is most strange as all USB sticks I have personally tested that comply to the above have all worked. I have observed problems with sticks that don't have a metal shroud and the team are investigating this.

I know the team are also testing many sticks at present following reports. If people can list USB sticks they are having problems with we can purchase the same devices and test them to investigate peoples observations.

Thanks in advance.

This one isn't working. I'd like to use it since it's so small. It has a metal shroud.

Re: USB Recording

Thanks, I will pass this information to the developers so the stick can be ordered and tested.

Re: USB Recording

My drone 2.0 records on USB just fine - using 33 MB per minute of recording.  I can read it using quicktime or iMovie.

Re: USB Recording

Same problem. Used an empty 8gb Sandisk (with no metal) casing. The video recorded to the stick but when I plugged it into my Macbook Pro to watch using Quicktime player it said it could not play the MP4 file. I noticed the MP4 file ended .mp4.infovid. I deleted the last bit to leave just .mp4 and still it didn't work.

I will try format drive but not hopeful. Will post again next try.

I recorded some yesterday and had one .infovid and a couple named .tmpvid.

My problem was I disconnected the battery while it was still recording.

Could you have done that, too?

Re: USB Recording

I had the same issue. If you change the temp tmpvide file extension to .mp4 it might play. Also I noticed that even though I had USB drive in and software was set to record to USB it still recorded to iPad . Found them in iPad photos. Also the issue is intermittent sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

Hope it helps.

Re: USB Recording

Finally got it to play. Used the same 8gb Sandisk. After flight I had three files - 2 executables (ending mp4.infovid) and a single Mp4 whih played no problem in Quicktime.

I am starting to think that it maybe either pressing the record button on the iPad or disconnecting the stick to early. Will check the record light is not flashing before I unplug this time.

Re: USB Recording

I tried renaming the .tmpvid to .mp4 and it didn't work. I really wish I had this video, too, because the drone fell from 60 ft for no apparent reason. I'd like to see if there were any clues on the video.

Check your iPad or iPhone photos to see if the video is there. I had that happen to me.

Hope it helps.

Re: USB Recording

Hi,

for information about USB recording, check this other post I just answered to:

Re: USB Recording

Parrot didn't connect the shield on the AR Drone 2.0 USB connector to ground so you don't get any shielding unless the USB stick provides the connection.  You need a USB stick with a metal shield on the connector that is connected to USB ground, otherwise there is too much noise on the USB buss for things to connect.  I have 6 USB sticks and only 1 of them worked.  It was the only one that satisfied the above requirement.  I broke open one of the non-working ones and connected the shield to USB ground and now that one is working.
Parrot:  you have a high speed USB buss directly above the AR Drone control circuit board that has a radio transmitter on it and you didn't ground the USB shielding?

Re: USB Recording

Something strange, i recorded fine on my USB stick yesterday, then  i bought a much smaller and lighter USB stick today but the drone will not record on it and still sends the video to my ipad. I put back the old USB stick and i now refuses to recognize even the same one that worked yesterday sad
Usb that worked yesterday but not today is a 2gb Philips FM02FD05B/00
The one it wont recognize at all is a Lacie Moskeyto 4gb

Re: USB Recording

Try the double insert trick... install the stick as you normally do... then before you take off... pull it out for a couple seconds and reinstall...

I used a 4GB USB drive, took off the metal clip to make it even lighter and it worked like a charm the very first time and no issues after.

Hi, I tried with Kingston 8 Gb, 16 Gb and SanDisk Data Traveler 4 Gb. None worked.  Just appears 2 or 3 Files XXXX.mp4.temp wich can't be played, even if renamed.

Re: USB Recording

What I have seen when that happens, the program/drone did not have a chance to finish creating the video, as in the usb was disconnected early, battery died, ect.  Make sure you let it sit for a few mins after hitting the stop record button.

I have also heard if you reconnect the drone battery, it may fix/correct the corrupted files, but I wouldn't count on that though.

Re: USB Recording

My experience is that the Lexar Echo stick (stub, actually) is the most practical. It is tiny and fast and works just fine with the drone. It is so small that it can get lost in the webbing so that you have to hunt for it.

But I found that unless you plan to use the Echo software that comes on the stick for backup purposes, you should probably re-format it on the computer before using it.

Re: USB Recording

I have a SanDisk Cruzer Fit SDCZ33-008G-B35 8 GB USB 2.0 USB Drive with Metal Shroud and nothing records if I use it. Completely blank FAT 32 formatted, and I get nothing, no files at all when set to record to USB and nothing recorded to my iPhone 4. Same happens when I use my iPad 3.

EDIT:

Tried again today, and though I have it set to record to the USB, it is recording to the phone only. It has a metal shroud, but just doesn't seem to be working.
