Topic: The Extreme - Marlboro Mclaren Mod for AR Drone 2.0 (26/July/2012)

This mod has improved a lot of hardware and software design errors from Parrot and recommend for professional players. big_smile

8. The 500mW (27dbm) TX power signal booster add-ons with 3 heat sinks upgrade for AR Drone 2.0 (the original TX power = 31.6mW (15dbm)). Now capable to reach the range at 600 meters away (1.2km diameter) with connecting to my AP. This is completely improved the WiFi randomly-disconnection issue of the Drone's video while in flying. Enabling a very smooth and steady video link. The Carbon Fibre bottom plate also added.

12. The 630mW (28dbm) TX power Access Point upgrade mod for the linkage in between the AR Drone 2.0 and the iPhone 4 device. The original TX power of the AR Drone 2.0 is just 31mW (15dbm). With a Circular Polarized antenna attached. Allowing the flight range to be extended up to 600 meters away from the Access Point location (radius). Altitude 300 meters (With Drone Control HD app). This AP requires Power-Over-Ethernet custom made cable - The black one RJ45 to T-Plug (Custom Made, not for sale in anywhere of this planet.). Powered by a 11.1v 3700mAh LiPo battery. Deploying on a portable tripod in the field.

These mods are the only way to get rid of the hardware design error from Parrot.  big_smile

Re: The Extreme - Marlboro Mclaren Mod for AR Drone 2.0 (26/July/2012)

very, very cool dude.excellent work on the hull, i have some cooling holes as well, they seem to do a good job, i never have a hot drone, can you say more about the ariel out the back? connections etc, was this a home made design or bought?
how about some good vids now?
well done again dude, looks well good.

Re: The Extreme - Marlboro Mclaren Mod for AR Drone 2.0 (26/July/2012)

I would love to see some video too... just to see if that thing can even hover stable or fly with decent results with all that weight added....

Re: The Extreme - Marlboro Mclaren Mod for AR Drone 2.0 (26/July/2012)

This is not today or yesterday mod. It had been 2 months already in the field. It was Redbull theme.   big_smile  some foam has been cut off from the inside of the hull and the body. so the weight is optimal measured in per gram calculation. It is good in against medium wind.

The Cloverleaf antenna for AR Drone 2.0 must be home made (2.4Ghz L Type SF-SMA plug).

Re: The Extreme - Marlboro Mclaren Mod for AR Drone 2.0 (26/July/2012)

Guy, didn't I post the video called "Nam Sang Wai Aerospace" before 2 months ago? I thought you know it. Do I have to post the same video again? During the end of the video there are a few pictures from the inside.

This Marlboro version is actually an evolved type of the Redbull one. It has added the side holes for increasing the sensitivity to the Air Pressure Sensor and using the much more lightweight SF-SMA plugs from the inside. So this unit is actually a few grams lighter than the Redbull one.

Sorry, I come back to tell people that the shell-less booster is end of production just last year so it is perform ok but no longer copy-able the mod-skill. So you can tell it is perform not ok. Because you won't be able to make it with your own anymore.  hmm

Re: The Extreme - Marlboro Mclaren Mod for AR Drone 2.0 (26/July/2012)

This is an amazing mod.
I estimate that I could make something, fix things but you did something awesome.
My only fear would be that wind blows that down/triggers the sensors at that 300m height
good Job !

I just tried it at 200m altitude on yesterday. No any side-effect triggering caused by the strong wind of directly blowing to the sensor. The sensor was really acting more efficiency. The side holes just did work flawlessly. big_smile

Hey Solaris can you please repost the pictures somewhere?

Re: The Extreme - Marlboro Mclaren Mod for AR Drone 2.0 (26/July/2012)

Ty for the photos.

What are you using for the exhaust holes?
Are they just some kind of plastic grommet? If so what size are they?

I thought you where using a bullet for your AP?

Re: The Extreme - Marlboro Mclaren Mod for AR Drone 2.0 (26/July/2012)

Made of Carbon Fibre pipe, not plastic.

Re: The Extreme - Marlboro Mclaren Mod for AR Drone 2.0 (26/July/2012)

Very nice job  big_smile
I just want it !!!
Can you make a building instruction for your mod?  roll

Re: The Extreme - Marlboro Mclaren Mod for AR Drone 2.0 (26/July/2012)

Hey what is the black glue you use on the center of the cloverleaf antenna?
Is it the same stuff you used to hold the SMA in the carbon fiber tube?

I wonder if this circuitry is discussed in detail anywhere i.e. do you have a link? I wonder how you interfaced to the Drone, and also how/if you turned-OFF the internal Drone Wifi signal.

Sorry man, the Open Frame Booster were all sold out and end of production already since 2 months ago. You won't be able to do it with or without circuitry blueprint right now. I have already ordered the new type replacement booster to supersede the open frame booster for other AR Drones. It is still being tested. But no link and no sharing at this point and probably will not be shared to the public on the net. This is for local flying group only.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I checked with their sales on a couple week ago about that "last one". He said the last one was sold (not updated). neutral

BTW, I have ordered the next generation of the 500mW booster from the manufacturer directly and it arrived on last week. But all of my Drones already have a Open Frame Booster installed. So there is no unmodifed Drone available for the new booster testing. I am also considering to solder the new booster onto the iPhone 4 directly.. (haha tongue ).

You could still describe at least how you got around the internal WiFi. I assume you cut the paths to the internal antenna?

I wonder why you would "promote" this mod and then delete-or-deny any references to how it was accomplished? I followed links to ardrone-flyers which were altered to point-back here, i.e. no info available.

No thanks to you for posting this!  tongue
