Topic: Two issues happened today... advise please...

Ok, so I took my drone outside today in to a field.  I had ALT Limit ON, Outdoor Flight ON and Outdoor Shell ON.

I flew the drone away from me and it got about 20 meters then it hit the brakes automatically.  I assume this was due to the signal strenght, anyway I could turn it around ok and started flying it back to me.  When I did this it all of a sudden started climbing and going on its own.  I couldn't control it..  The screen said ALERT ULTRASOUND as you would expect as it took itself over 6 meters.  I ran after it otherwise I was going to lose it completly and managed to hit LAND at which point the drone came down ok.  This was at about 80% battery as I had only just started my flight.

So, now am I nervous about flying it so I took it back to the house and just decided to contine doing an hover on the patio.  I was happily hovering at about 7 foot over the patio when all of a sudden it dropped from the sky and hit the floor (quite hard).  It was as if i had hit emergency land, however I didn't.  All 4 feet LED's went RED along with the system LED in the middle of the drone.  The iPhone app simply said CANNOT CONNECT TO TOY.

I carried it inside and thought I will put the indoor hood on and see if it still works.  So I disconnected the battery to reset it, left it about 20 secs and reconnected the battery (iphone still in app).  All of a sudden all 4 LEDS went as they should and it spooled and went to take off as if it was still flying before dropping from the sky.  The camera started working again and everything seemed normal.  The battery was at approx 25%.

I have no idea why this happen and am very concerned whether to fly it again or not as its an expensive unstable gadget at present (£300).

Have any of you experienced such events?

How did you over come them?

Do Parrot recognise this issue?

Let me know your comments.

Thanks
Mark

Re: Two issues happened today... advise please...

I had the first issue that you mentioned where it just climbed really, really high out of control and then dropped down to the ground 2-3 mins later.
I returned mine for a refund with HMV and am now gunna wait a few months for it to be sorted before buying again.

Re: Two issues happened today... advise please...

I've experienced both problems a few times, and can readily reproduce the first one.  I have always been able to get the drone back, but I watch it like a hawk and hit the land button as soon as it looks like it's getting out of control.  For me, the two issues also happens in the order you describe.

Typing this, I think that I should reset the drone after an unexpected ascent.

I try to keep my flying over the lawn, as the drone has less chance of being hurt if it falls on grass, but I've had a 6+ ft drop onto my driveway, which caused it to flip over and scratch up the outdoor hull somewhat.

It's pretty sturdy so far and I have (touch wood) not broken anything yet.

Concerning hitting the brakes, I've seen this when I fly over a sharp shadow on the ground below it.  I suspect it's the hover camera that tries to stabilize on the image of the shadow.

[EDIT] I've got firmware 1.1.3 and fly it with an iPod Touch 4th gen.

Re: Two issues happened today... advise please...

What does other peoples drones do when you fly them over 20-30 mtrs away from them?  Do they hit the brakes like mine?

Also, had an email back from Parrot today who have simply said, its faulty and I should contact my reseller for a replacement.

What are you thoughts on this?  I don't want to go to the hassel of sending it back for the replacement to have the same issue.

Has anyone else returned there due to the auto ascent issue and found that this problem exists on their replacement model?

Surley this is a software issue??

What do you think?  Should I send it back?

Re: Two issues happened today... advise please...

I've been experimenting more today, which was a beautiful evening for flying.  It was one of the least windy evenings we've had for a while, and I could not get the drone to ascend too high.  This led me to a new theory smile.  I wonder if, when it's somewhat windy, whether the drone's stabilizing and height control software gets conflicting or out of range information and it overcompensates and then gets confused?

Concerning distance - I've been trying to fly the drone around the house (out of sight), and it looks like if it gets too far, that it doesn't get controlled properly anymore.  My experience is that the front camera video freezes, and then I don't know what the drone is doing, so I walk to it (where it normally hovers, waiting patiently for its master smile).

To answer your specific question, what do you have to lose to get a new drone, other than some time without it!
