Topic: Why is there no WiFi?

I received a Parrot Asteroid for Christmas this year & just finished installing it.  It is exactly what I was looking for in a car stereo system, but ultimately left me disappointed & frustrated.

I cannot get the device connected to the internet which leaves much of the device's functionality useless.  I'm stuck because I have a brand new droid bionic, which because it's android, it does not support Bluetooth PAN/DUN. (the 3rd party apps to allow this don't work either)   I turned on my HotSpot service on my phone, but there is not WiFi on the Asteroid.  I can't buy a 3G USB stick because Verizon only sells 4G ones now.  I can't do USB tethering because the asteroid doesn't support it.  So in short I'm completely hosed. (yes, I have the latest firmware on the Asteroid)

After an entire weekend of installing the device & removing my old stereo, its so unsatisfying to sit in my car & look at the blank maps screen as the system tells me I can't connect to the network, can't get to the weather, can't get internet radio, etc. the whole time my super fast 4G device is connected directly to it.

WiFi would have completely solved this with ease without blood shooting from my eyes in frustration.

I was on the fence about going through all the work of installing it or exchanging it for another gift.  I really feel like I should have chosen the later.

Welcome to the club (of frustration and disappointment)

Re: Why is there no WiFi?

you might want to look into rooting your phone.  My evo 4g can now create a Bluetooth DUN and can run all the apps on the asteroid.  Check out the XDA website for more info and how-to's, it's definitely worth it.

The only problem I have run across is when running a BT DUN, streaming music and a call comes in, my phone sometimes locks up...information overload perhaps. Other than that, everything works pretty well.

Re: Why is there no WiFi?

Yep, for iPhones you will need to jailbreak and pay $20 for MyFi to enable Bluetooth tethering. This is hardly the ideal workaround. But I couldn't wait for Parrot to enable USB tethering. Quite a sore subject around here I would think. This should be there #1 priority as data access seems to be biggest issue with the Asteroid.

Re: Why is there no WiFi?

I could root my Bionic (which that's a whole different level of frustration with stuff not working) but doesn't that seem kinda ridiculous that I would have to hack my phone to make my car stereo work?  Ugh.  Well, glad to know I'm not the only one with blood shooting from my eyes.  I'd return the stereo, but that would be admitting I blew an entire weekend installing it.

Oh, on a side note, I had the Asteroid crash on me while doing a voice song search. (whatever they call it)  Totally sucked cause I couldn't reboot it till I got to my destination and turn off my car.  That was a very long, quiet drive.  (more blood from the eyes...)

Re: Why is there no WiFi?

I bought an Asteroid today.  I have an iPhone with iOS 5.0.1.  I spent the extra $20 a month to turn on tethering and although I am supposed to be able to tether via bluetooth, none of the apps will work.  I configured the Asteroid to connect to the network via bluetooth and it says it's connected, but all the apps just sit there.  TuneIn radio took 7 minutes to tune in to anything.  I get no map information or weather.

When I use the TuneIn app on my iPhone, I'm connected within seconds, so it's not my connection.

Re: Why is there no WiFi?

Did you update to 1.4.3? If not try that first. Also, just jailbreak your phone and get MyFi from the Cydia store and bypass paying a monthly fee for Internet service you already paid for, just to tether.

Re: Why is there no WiFi?

The first thing I did was upgrade to 1.4.3.  I'm not jailbreaking my iPhone just to get my $350 car stereo to work like it's supposed to and I think that's really crappy advice to be giving out as a solution.

Re: Why is there no WiFi?

Ok Stiff, do what you want. It's not bad advice, but if you're too scared to jailbreak then suit yourself. It's quite safe and anyone who doesn't want to be crippled by apple and the wireless carriers does it.

Re: Why is there no WiFi?

I'm not scared to jailbreak it, I don't want it jailbroken.

Re: Why is there no WiFi?

I think that everyone should Root or Jailbreak. You bought it and you should be able to use it to the fullest capability.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with bdkennedy in that he shouldn't HAVE to. It doesn't make much sense that you would have to mod a device to get it to work with something that says its compatible. Considering they have the Android on the back burner for compatibility in favor of the iPhone, and I constantly see people with iPhones having issues, thats a little ridiculous.

Re: Why is there no WiFi?

USB tethering update is currently being worked on as soon as it comes available I will post here.

I have a 6 GB 200 mins my 10 plan with rogers Tethering is included for an approximate negotiated amount of about 70$ month. iPhone 3gs works great for blue tooth tethering! I spent a while on the phone and somehow the agent cooked up a plan which was 8 bucks cheaper and the original bargaining tactic was 4 bucks off. Life costs something it would seem.

You can't blame Parrot because your provider is being bad or your plan isn't big enough or your fake iPhone isn't an iPhone.

I'm sorry, is this even English?  And I'm not sure where anyone stated they have a "fake iphone"...do those even exist - and if so why would someone want to copy a POS apple product?

"because it's android, it does not support Bluetooth PAN/DUN."

Android = fake iPhone, but you new that already. Bluetooth PAN/DUN probably has a licence or something that android refuses to pay.

Rooting is the same as jail breaking HaHa welcome to the club.
I guess the expression you pay for what you get or if you buy an android you don't pay for what you don't get.
Regardless I know for a fact that Apple and Parrot have been working for years to make these devices work together.
I would suggest  that this round goes to apple.

I usually don't do these kinds of posts, but you sure got me worked up now parrotplatt.

You do know the Android project was started before the iPhone was even known to exist, right?
Also, why are you bashing the OS of your car stereo?

parrotplatt wrote:

PAN/DUN is a part of the official Bluetooth specifications, which have no licensing fee, and from the looks of it iPhone doesn't seem to have it.
Apart from that, I know for a fact that Android 4.0 supports PAN since that's how I connect my Asteroid to the internet.

Google isn't trying to stop rooting, in fact the Nexus phones are sold with it as a feature, in contrast to Apple banning everyone who jailbreaks.

Don't even get me started on this one.

Kudos to Parrot, but how does that relate to the situation at all?

parrotplatt wrote:

By what logic does Apple win? People was complaining about having to jailbreak their iPhones, and since Android users had to root, Apple automatically wins?

I respect most iPhone users since just buying stuff from Apple doesn't mean they're bad people, but people who are constantly in the face of Android users speaking of how "Android is just a cheap iPhone clone" annoy me so much.

Back on topic, I'd love to see WiFi adapter support, it's about the only thing missing apart from integration with the Prey Project.

Well put....and i agree.

Re: Why is there no WiFi?

Hi,

Wifi adapter would require new hardware components currently unavailable on the Parrot ASTEROID and therefor, it cannot be achieved with this product.
Of coure, we hope to be able to offer this feature within futures devices.

Yo happen to have a link to a specific thread or any tips?  I have a rooted EVO and cannot get this thing connected and I'm sick of trying.  (have a EVO with Asteroid updated to 1.5)
