Topic: New Parrot Asteroid Units at CES + Future Plans

Just saw that Parrot announced THREE new Asteroid units at CES 2012. Awesome!

I just barely ordered the classic unit today and am hoping for good results with it. With the new units displayed, I am hoping that there will continue to be updates to the classic unit.

Now for a DOOMSDAY scenario, what is going to happen to our existing classic units after this? In the case that Parrot ceases to support the classic models, would it be possible to unlock the bootloader and release some of the source so we can continue to support the units on our own?

I realize there is a lot of corporate secret sauce baked in there, but if you get enough support for the open-source world, you can see amazing things start happening. Example being Cyanogenmod, which is such a big great effort.

tl,dr; I am excited for my unit and hope there is a great future ahead for it.

In my opinion, I think they will continue to update the Parrot Asteroid Classic. Other than the new 2DIN Radio, the other two are not radios like the Parrot Classic is. Therefore, I think they will continue to update the Classic. Think about Apple. It doesn't matter if you have the first iPhone ever made or the iPhone 4s. All the phones get the same updates, and i believe this is what is going to happen with the parrot. Tell me what you think. Parrot will not risk losing these customers. They are still a company and will continue to update the Parrot Classic. Especially because it is still a very new product with so much potential. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING OF THE PARROT CLASSIC AND MANY GREAT FEATURES WILL BE ON THE WAY. And anyways... Its the only 1DIN RADIO that Parrot has so far.

Difference between Apple updating all their old crap the same as the new and pretty much any Android device..

Apple continues to make money on their users after the sale is completed. They get a cut from each App, song, movie sold/rented through their services..

Lowly Android hardware makers, they get squat, dump the product on the market, get the initial commission, then that's it.. All App/music/movie/etc money goes elsewhere, not to the hardware maker.

For that reason, I could easily see a company like this bailing on old tech to focus on the new.

I'd hate to see it but, without recurring income on a product, they all die. Eventually.

Re: New Parrot Asteroid Units at CES + Future Plans

I think the Parrot Asteroid Classic will get navigation.
Looking at the CES Preview movie they are showing on their site via Youtube which features both the Classic and navigation.
No distinction between the Classic and 2DIN is made there big_smile

UPDATE: I stand corrected.... just saw the * in the movie.... navigation only for NAV and 2DIN....
sad sad sad sad sad sad sad

That would be awesome! Hope it happens! I'm installing mine today, can't wait to start messing with it.

Re: New Parrot Asteroid Units at CES + Future Plans

It would be foolish not to continue to support such an innovative product that hasn't even reached its full potential yet. Perfecting the Asteroid would only enhance Parrot's reputation in the car audio niche.

Please come back when it's installed and let us know your experiences.  Hopefully they won't be as frustrating as mine.

Re: New Parrot Asteroid Units at CES + Future Plans

my experence with the install sucks...........

I am on my second asteroid. I had the popping the freezing the on and off bluetooth on both units.
I might give up and sent back the second one....but i am tooooo techyyy and want this to work.

The tech support answer was wow send it back, we will check it out and replace it......... if we find it defective.
i asked if anyone else has had these issues...comment was no...all the support techs have one and dont have these problems.

i want this to work but if they do not come out with a fix soon i will send back the second one too Crutchfield...who had better support then Parrot. Crutchfield is great.

Re: New Parrot Asteroid Units at CES + Future Plans

New one today...seemed like everything was working. I was on  bluetooth tether listening to tune in Radio and deceided to make a call.
I press the phone button waiting for the voice command. I got on screen....... phonebook is busy? Of cource i had to disconnect the tethering to
access the phone. I believe most of the problems are bluetooth related.
P.S. I keep a paperclip close to the asteroid for resetting the unit....gotta love the pops.
Anyone else running into these problems..?
Would like to know support is looking into all the freezing???
Are you out there support?

I haven't heard any pops yet, but I haven't hooked up my amps yet either. Seems everyone is having roughly the same issues and concerns..

Just FYI, I know this is old but Apple does NOT continue support on all old products. I know 2g stopped getting updates about 2 years ago and the first gen 3g now also (don't quote me on 3g though).

I do hope they continue to improve this device for sure cause I just purchased mine! Doh!!!
Any how I'm having some of the same issues described with B.T. and the loud pop, WOW!

Re: New Parrot Asteroid Units at CES + Future Plans

When i say continue support i mean that no matter if you have the oldest product (iPhone 3) or the newest product (iPhone 4s) all products get the newest FREE update. Sorry if this was not clear.

Re: New Parrot Asteroid Units at CES + Future Plans

Hmmm. I think you were clear fellow Parrot owner, but Apple no longer provides any updates of any kind to 2g (original iPhone and as far as I know iPhone 3 first gen).
I know 2g for sure as we just upgraded my wife's 2g about 7 months ago and it was because a year+ before that Apple was no longer providing updates of any kind for it. Plus I had the first gen iPhone3 as well but that burnt out before I thought I read Apple was going to stop updates for it.
Cheers mate!

Lol hahaha, I also have a paperclip with the sole purpose of resetting my Asteroid in the tray just below big_smile And my sub 'pops' too when I reset the thing. At least it's an indication that the reset registered tongue

Re: New Parrot Asteroid Units at CES + Future Plans

Double LOL. All I had in my car for weeks was a messy blue pen, meaning my Asteroid's reset button is thoroughly covered in ink. I just force updated to a paperclip.
